Chapter Summary

United Nations peace operations-neutral third-party interventions which can include peacekeeping and peacebuilding assignments-are mainly focused on establishing security and assisting in the creation of institutions to handle conflict. This book Gender equality and United Nations Peace Operations in Timor Leste argues that expanding our inquiry of peace operations to incorporate their effects on gender power-relations produces a more detailed understanding of peace operations and their contribution to peace. It contributes to theory building on both the use of the gender power-relations concept, and on how peace operations affect these power-relations between men and women. To accomplish this, the study systematizes ideas and suggestions from previous research in an analytical framework and uses this in the analysis of the case of Timor-Leste. The book focuses on two dimensions of gender power-relations- political equality and security equality-where we primarily expect effects of peace operations.

Keywords: gender equality; gender power-relations concept; Timor Leste; United Nations peace operations
