Chapter Summary

This chapter examines the legal framework for the international trade of fish and fish products, the issues are discussed within FAO with respect to promoting responsible fish trade, and concerns related to the application of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) on commercially exploited aquatic species. It analyses the internationally agreed market related measures adopted under the IPOA-IUU, as well as some of the recent developments at the international level to strengthen market and trade measures to combat IUU fishing, such as catch certification and trade documentation, trade restrictive measures, traceability systems, use of harmonised commodity coding systems, eco-labelling, and other market related measures. The chapter discusses examples of internationally agreed market or trade related measures which the IPOA-IUU has adopted to address IUU fishing. It also discusses other relevant market measures such as the eco-labelling and restricting business with IUU fishers.

Keywords: international fish trade; IUU fishing concerns
