Chapter Summary

This preliminary material presents the table of contents and acknowledgements for the book Buddhism and Empire: The Political and Religious Culture of Early Tibet. A list of abbreviations for frequently-cited works, an introduction, and a prologue on old Tibetan are also provided here. The book presents a study on early Tibetan religion. Tibetan religion, and especially Tibetan Buddhism, has been extensively studied. From an early date this activity was the domain of Indologists, who saw Tibetan translations as a resource for studying Buddhist texts whose original versions in Indic languages were lost. Even though Buddhism has provided many constants of Tibetan culture, the key to understanding its role is to observe its adaptations over time.

Keywords: Early Tibet; old Tibetan; Tibetan Buddhism; Tibetan religion
