Chapter Summary

This chapter summarizes Augustine's philosophical theory of music with special reference to his great early treatise De musica in order to remove doubts not only with regard to its continuity but also its consistency. The summary will be followed by some brief notes on the application of the musical paradigm in other Augustinian texts, and on the influence of that paradigm in medieval musical and philosophical theory. If we read this discussion in light of the theories summarised above, the biblical narrative in the opening verses of Genesis is a horizontal musical structure comprising 6 units marked by the presence of the word &t;day&t; each of which is potentially subdivided into 4 units marked by the presence of the words &t;And God said 'Let there be'&t;, &t;And God made&t;, &t;And so it was made&t;, and &t;And God saw that it was good&t;.
