Chapter Summary

On 29th of August 1498, as they had already found and discovered what they had come in search of, both in terms of spices and precious stones, and as they could not establish peace and cordial relations with the people in India, Vasco da Gama and the other captains agreed, that they should depart. They decided to take with them the men that they had held, as the men, upon returning to Calicut, might help establish friendly relations. They therefore set sail and departed for Portugal, rejoicing at their good fortune in discovering the great things that they had found. On 20th of September they reached Anjediva, a hilly country, very beautiful and with a pleasant climate, close to which there were six small islands. They found themselves off a very large city Mogadishu, with houses of several stories. Finally, on the 7th of January 1499,they cast anchor off Malindi.
