Chapter Summary

This appendix section presents Vasco Da Gama's instructions to Pedro Álvares Cabral. He lays down very good rules so that ships do not lose each other. For instance, each time that he intends to change course the Captain General will make two fires (cannon shots) and all the ships shall reply with two others each; and after they have replied thus, all of them shall change course. This is followed by a note on the sailing instructions from the Cape Verde Islands. These include navigating according the weather, so that navigation is shortest, the ships are more secure from shipworms, and in this way maintaining the provisions in a better manner and keeping the people healthy.
