Chapter Summary

This front matter section of this book titled Arabian Seas 1700-1763 Volume 1: The Western Indian Ocean in the Eighteenth Century contains the table of contents, a list of abbreviations and the preface. In the eighteenth century Europe looked with amazement and undisguised envy upon India, Persia, and other seats of wealth and wisdom of the mysterious East. The book is not concerned with European expansion (that is, European history contingently located outside of the region) nor is it one of the VOC (Archief van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) or EIC (East India Company) in the Arabian seas, where the fundamental concern is with the Company and its trade to Europe and the area in which it operates is but secondary.

Keywords: Arabian Seas; East India Company; Indian Ocean
