At international level initiatives for the harmonisation or rationalization of international trade law by means of &t;soft law&t; instruments began to proliferate in the 1980s, at a time when unification by traditional means seemed to have lost much of its original impetus. Definitely one of the most important &t;soft-law&t; instruments in the field of international trade law is the Principles of International Commercial Contracts (hereinafter the &t;UNIDROIT Principles&t;). This introductory chapter provides an overview of all other chapters in the book.
