Chapter Summary

This chapter talks about the culture and traditions of Tibet. Mount Kailash and Mount Everest are in Tibet. The Tibetan and Burmese languages are related. The important foods harvested are barley, wheat, peas, and lentils. Tibetans are delighted when auspicious signs, good omens, lucky days occur and are terribly concerned otherwise. The remains of people are cremated or purified or buried. Weddings are considered to be parents' most vital responsibility. Tibetans wear a felt cloak in the summer and sheep skin robes in the winter. The central foundation of Tibet's economy is in the arable land and the production from the wilderness. Tibetan flag has the symbols of three living beings. The cabinet has one monk cabinet minister and three lay cabinet ministers. On important occasions, the abbot with general responsibilities as the Dalai Lama's personal attendant would meet with the cabinet at the same rank as the cabinet ministers.
