Chapter Summary

This is the introductory chapter of the book, which is a directory based on the text prepared by O. Zwierlein, and L. Annaei Sene-cae Tragoediae. The sources of listed conjectures are shown in full in the bibliography; in the rare cases where the exact reference could not be determined or was not available, the authors refer to the intermediate source with "apud". To establish a conjecture directory, the inclusion of the first humanist work is related to a well-known difficulty, the distinction often unclear, or between correctio emendatio publisher and lesson recentiores codices. The two appendices on the "Editio Ascensiana" (1514) and "Editio Aldina" (1517) provide an overview of the significant critical work of Jodocus Badius and Girolamo Avanzi. The directory cannot, however, lead to a thorough study of the history text and humanist editions to time.
