Chapter Summary

In Chinese philosophical sources one can find several discussions concerning the evaluation of personality. The main concern was political and moral: the social rank, with its three aspects of comparative evaluation, merit and social power. The problem of human nature, which had been posed back in the time of early Confucianism, was developed under Neo-Confucianism in ontological debates on the origin of evil. In the West, contemporary studies have stressed on the interrelationship between intelligence and gifted education. The so called learning theories stress the importance of experience and education (constructivism) and behaviour (behaviourism). Probably the most significant for the development of personality is the so-called 'social learning' that includes 'vicarious learning' (noticing and recalling the kinds of environmental feedback and social conditioning other people get) and 'imitation'.
