Chapter Summary

This chapter focuses on two interlinked issues, advocating for an attempt to address economic and social issues in a global context for a long-term solution to the absence of effective government and examining the North's implementation of the economic and social approach to serve its own interests. The link between economic and social approaches and international peace and the legal basis for such an approach are explained. The approach, efforts, and success of the international community in this area are determined mainly by the foundations and tendencies of international law and by the relationship between the needs of the South and the model used by the North to address economic and social problems. This analysis allows an exploration of obstacles to the effectiveness of the international community in meeting economic and social needs.
