Chapter Summary

An overview of all the evidence gathered, now gives us the opportunity, briefly to summarize the meanings of ὄργια and its cognates and to review the development of the meaning. In contrast to most of the Lexica, which place the meaning 'secret custom', 'secret rite' in the forefront, the author believes one can follow the representation given by Prof. H. Bolkestein, that ὄργια is, in fact, a synonym of τελετή and that the development of the meanings of both terms runs parallel.

Keywords: ὄργια; H. Bolkestein
