Chapter Summary

This index presents a list of ancient author names that occur in this book titled A Contrite Heart. The early medieval arguments traced in the book seem especially prominent during the 9th century, but they should be considered with some attention to the precedents of the second half of the 8th century and to the continuation of debate over many of the same issues in the 10th century. The evolution of a compelling synthesis of religious and juridical ideas is especially noteworthy in view of the somewhat ad hoc organisation of political, judicial, and pastoral administration in the Carolingian domains. The transformation of Western law in the Carolingian period resulted from the importation of biblical foundations for law, and from a particular mode of reading sacred scripture.

Keywords: Carolingian domains; Western law
