Chapter Summary

Projects on international waterways require special handling and hence the Bank recognizes the cooperation and goodwill of riparians which is essential to the most efficient utilization and exploitation of international waterways for developmental purposes. This chapter presents an Operational Manual Statement (OMS) that covers the types of international waterways and types of projects. Before an appraisal is undertaken for a proposed project on an international waterway, a memorandum should be addressed to the Chairman of the Loan Committee giving all relevant information on the international aspects of the project, and the Chairman of the Loan Committee should be informed promptly during the project cycle of any significant event which may have taken place in connection therewith. The chapter discusses procedures ensuring that the international aspects of a project on an international waterway are brought to the fore and dealt with at the earliest possible opportunity.
