Chapter Summary

This chapter intends to contribute to the discussion on the globalization of religion by looking at forms and processes of what I consider the new face of global Protestant evangelism: the virtualization of spiritual experience. Contextualized in this volume on religion and technology in Asia, the chapter provides three interrelated propositions. The chapter argues that as the influence of online evangelism becomes more extensive, contemporary Christianity may foresee a globalized process that encourages membership and spiritual authority in unique ways, and in so doing, further enlarges the community of its believers. It is in such a process that creativity among online Christians is being unleashed and the ethos of contributing to online evangelism developed.
