Chapter Summary

A two-volume translation of Josef Kulischer's fact-loaded book Allgemeine Wirtschaft sgeschichte des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit appeared in Poland in 1961 on the initiative of Marian Małowist. Małowist emphasized the relationship between experiments on the island of São Tomé and the Brazilian plantation. When analysing the slavery and plantation "experiment" which the Portuguese had carried out on that small island, he did not conceal an emotional touch: "In the 16th and 17th centuries, this really dreadful island played a considerable role in the emerging world economy. Most of Marian Małowist contributions in languages other than Polish were written in French. He made indeed a significant impact on French historiography of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Keywords: Brazilian plantation; Marian Małowist; Polish economic historiography
