Chapter Summary

The censure of pastors followed the same rules as those applied to ordinary members of the congregation, although there were additional requirements particular to the exercise of a ministry. While their faults were few in number, they seem to have fallen within all the various categories. In addition, everyone was aware of these transgressions; they could not be hidden. Suspension from ministerial responsibilities was the most common sanction and was accompanied in some cases by suspension from the Lords Supper. Though accusations were initiated at the level of the local consistory, the subsequent investigation and judgment were generally handled by the provincial synod. The application of discipline to pastors was a delicate matter. It could lead to considerable lobbying and power struggles among pastors, consistories and synods.
