Chapter Summary

This chapter of the Yuejue shu, describes a debate between Master Jini and King Goujian of Yue about Legalist methods of government. It consists of a extended narrative concerning Wu Zixu's reaction to the death of King Helü of Wu and a short prose piece comparing corrupt ministers with the dangers posed by beautiful women. There are numerous accounts of the enmity between Wu and Yue engendered by this battle, and in particular King Fuchai of Wu's determination to wreck his revenge on the man responsible for the death of his father, this text is unique in its focus on the plight of ordinary soldiers at this catastrophic defeat.
