Chapter Summary

This chapter explains a holistic reading of the Psalms 49. With regard to the demarcation of the introduction (V.2-5) there is broad consensus among the exegetes. In shape it differs from the rest of the psalm, also it is framed by the word (V.2 and 5). It is characterized by a sapiential accent, but also shows prophetic elements. V.13 and 21 are connected by short word associations with the respective preceding verse. In the case in Old Testament poetry, the two refrains are not identical. The perspective of the Psalm is not sociological, but provides fundamental anthropological problem. Psalmist's wisdom does not come from experience, not from the scientific observation of life, but by faith. It is only justified theologically. The original text of the chapter is in German.
