Chapter Summary

This chapter opened with a scheme for characterizing the representation and consumption of cultural commodities that focused on social representation in creating a consumption consciousness along with the circumstances of consumption outlining the categorization of consumption on the basis of a consumption ethos. The preferences of cultural commodities producers in media and advertising representation described in this chapter pointed to a focus on the commodity being a Tsugaru cultural commodity, the commodity itself, its emergence through specialized skills, and the importance of the commodity in the culture economy of the area as a tourist product. Created in the social sense through representation in various mediums, consumed in various forms for different reasons, the reality of the consumption of Tsugaru lacquerware and Tsugaru shamisen outlines both the complexity of the numerous elements determining the fate of cultural commodities in a culture economy, also potential for cultural commodities in local revitalization.
