Chapter Summary

This specialized agency, with its seat in Rome, was founded on 16 October 1945 at a state conference in Quebec, as permanent forum for international cooperation in the agricultural field. In essence, FAO has replaced the International Agricultural Institute, which was founded in 1905 and dissolved into FAO in 1948. According to Article I of the FAO Constitution, FAO shall collect, analyse, interpret and disseminate information relating to nutrition, food and agriculture, whereby the term agriculture and its derivatives include fisheries, marine products, forestry and primary forestry products. It shall promote and, where appropriate, shall recommend national and international action with respect to research, education, administration and public awareness relating to nutrition, food and agriculture.
