Chapter Summary

Pursuant to Article 102 of the United Nations Charter, all international agreements entered into by any member state of the United Nations shall be registered with and published by the United Nations Secretariat. The United Nations Treaty Series (UNTS), is an extensive reference source with more than 2400 volumes published containing the references and texts or more than 60,000 registered treaties and related actions. The Treaty Section of the Office of Legal Affairs reviews all international agreements submitted for registration to ensure that they have entered into force, have been concluded by at least two parties possessing treaty-making capacity, e.g. sovereign states or intergovernmental organizations and that such parties intend the agreement to be legally binding at international law.
