Chapter Summary

This chapter presents an objective picture of current dynamics within Korean industrial relations from the perspective of a foreign invested company in the metal industry. It introduces the characteristics and particularities of how unions and industry interact, and examines how South Korean collective bargaining operates. The chapter discusses several new challenges for foreign invested companies arising from the development of national level collective bargaining, centralized union structures, and local enterprise-union relation. It suggests alternative ways and means for union and management to handle the challenges of industrial relations in South Korea. The chapter answers following questions: what are the organizational characteristics and particular conditions of both social partners in reference to a Western European understanding of an industrial union and employer association; what are the challenges a foreign investment company faces at the industry-wide and local enterprise level; and what are appropriate labour management approaches for creating a union-management partnership.

Keywords: collective bargaining; foreign invested companies; Korean industrial relations; labour management; metal sector
