Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book Myths, Martyrs, and Modernity contains the table of contents, the list of illustrations, the list of contributors and editors, the list of abbreviations, introduction, acknowledgments and the bibliography of Jan N. Bremmer. The introduction provides a sketch of the life and works of Jan Bremmer, and then presents structure and organization of the book. The book provides a broad spectrum of approaches to a wealth of topics, reflecting the nature of Jans own scholarship. The publications in his early years cover various topics in Greek religion, especially the relationshipand tensionbetween myth and ritual, and culminate in the publication of his dissertation as a book in 1983 and of an edited volume on Greek mythology in 1987. In 1981, he published, together with his Utrecht colleague Jan den Boeft, the first in a series of influential articles on early Christian martyrs.
