Chapter Summary

This chapter answers the question: what is high and low level participation in popular religiosity, and what is the social location of this participation? To understand interpretation of participation in popular religiosity, it looks at some interpretations in the literature about this phenomenon. It starts with dualistic interpretations that emphasise the opposition between popular religiosity and official religion. Next it describes the complementary approach, which locates popular religiosity in research context: as a phenomenon within the Catholic Church and related in a complementary way to official religion. Hence participation in popular religiosity can be understood in complementarity with official religion within the Catholic Church. It then offers a theological legitimisation of popular religiosity as being in complementarity with official religion within the Catholic Church, using the framework of sacramentology. Finally it deals systematically with the participation dimension of popular religiosity in the research context.

Keywords: Catholic Church; complementary approach; dualistic interpretations; official religion; popular religiosity; religious participation; sacramentology
