Chapter Summary

This chapter discusses text of the OT-Masorah. This text examines the three fascicles of Biblia Hebraica Quinta (BHQ) which have appeared to date. Five aspects of BHQ serve as springboards for wider ranging reflections: production schedule; format; treatment of poetry; updateability; and advantages and disadvantages vis-à-vis a parallel project, the Oxford Hebrew Bible (OHB). In Aleppo, Syria, anti-Jewish riots destroyed the synagogue and many of its treasures. The chapter then discusses Greek (OT) and its modern translations of the Septuagint Bible. It presents Greek (NT) editions and manuscripts. The Byzantine textual tradition of the New Testament is represented by a large number of manuscripts. History and theory of Scripture translations argues for the importance of Bible translations through its historical achievements and theoretical frames of reference. The missionary expansion of Christianity owes its very being to translations.

Keywords: Biblia Hebraica Quinta (BHQ); Byzantine textual tradition; Oxford Hebrew Bible (OHB); scripture translations
