Chapter Summary

This chapter raises questions about the Gospel of Judas in general and the earliest published interpretations of it. How can seasoned and distinguished scholars so thoroughly misread this gospel? In attempting to answer this question it must noted that the Gospel of Judas is a very unusual and complicated text. Its difficulties are compounded by the physical condition of the manuscript, with extensive lacunae occurring in crucial passages. The chapter attempts to answer the following questions: How does Judas Iscariot know who Jesus is? Is the number thirteen Judas' lucky number? Can Judas be seen as a member of the "immortal generation"? What is "the kingdom" whose mysteries are revealed to Judas? To whom does Judas offer his sacrifice? It looks upon the Gospel of Judas as an ironic literary caricature of a gospel. The only thing that makes it a "Sethian" gospel is the Sethian myth embedded in it.
