Chapter Summary

In a warring society, such as medieval Spain, an important part of a nobleman's education, especially of one who aspired to the throne, was mastering the use of weapons, war strategies, and conquest. During the years prince that Alfonso was learning the art of war and love, the court of Castile, under the leadership of his father, began the search for a suitable wife for him. Alfonso received many honors during his tour of the kingdom, but also took the opportunity to find out about the state of public order and the administration of justice. Alfonso was the first king to plan out his government, especially when it came to monetary and fiscal policy, based on the decisions of the Cortes. Many cities and towns in Castile and León staged extraordinary welcome ceremonies for Alfonso. Everyone had great expectations regarding the young king who was touted as a learned man.
