Chapter Summary

According to the documents available, Alfonso X, King of Castile and León, was born in the imperial city of Toledo on November 23, 1221, on the Feast of St. Clement. Little is known about Alfonso X's childhood, but according to tradition he spent his childhood and adolescence,, under the supervision of his caretaker, away from the influence of the court and in direct contact with the people he was to rule. Alfonso X in his Estoria de España attributes the arrangement of the marriage between Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile to her mother, doña Leonor Plantagenet, who through an astounding logic managed to effect the marriage despite the blood ties. Scholars who study the diplomas of Alfonso's chancellery, ,indicate that when he mentions &t;family,&t; in the forewords he is referring to don Fernando and doña Beatriz; while in the diplomas &t;family,&t; means his wife and children.
