Chapter Summary

This chapter presents reviews of this book titled Social Stratification in Chinese Societies and its chapters. Women in China's Long Twentieth Century is an extended version of Hershatter's earlier essay published in Journal of Asian Studies and is seen as a complement to Guide to Women's Studies in China, an edited volume by her and three associates. Drawing the bulk of the contents from the JAS essay, the book reviews major scholarly works (including translated works) on women in the 20th century mainland China in the English-language. The review covers quite a volume of research literature (650 citations) grounded in different academic disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, politics, history, and women studies.

Keywords: 20th century mainland China; Chinese societies; social stratification; women studies
