Chapter Summary

This conclusory chapter provides a brief review of a competing interpretive position on the character and significance of the doctrine of inner sense, and a final series of reflections upon the wider significance of the identification of the aporia of inner sense, and the possible directions for research that it reveals. The chapter attempts to set out systematically Kants doctrine of inner sense, and provide a basis for a scholarly estimation of each of Kants various and variant indications of its structure and significance. No thesis was more central or determinative in particular than was the heterogeneity thesis, as this was set out first in the Transcendental Aesthetic of the Critique of Pure Reason. In Kants Transcendental Idealism, Allison dedicated an important chapter to the doctrine of inner sense. He repeats Patons lament that Kants doctrine of self-knowledge is the most obscure and difficult part of his philosophy.
