Chapter Summary

Kant announced his epochal call to the supremely difficult task of the self-cognition of reason in the first-edition Preface to the Critique of Pure Reason. This chapter is concerned primarily with Kants doctrine of inner intuition, its most amplified account or appearance is to be found within this subjective deduction. In the novel proof-structure of the second-Edition Deduction, inner sense appears to possess a certain atopicality, a variant role and status. Kant wishes, in the Paralogisms as in the Deductions, to grant safe passage to the transcendental determination of the nature and limits of cognition through a strait too narrow for the requirements of Seelenlehre. In the first paralogism, Kant claimed the independence of the I from synthetic or intuitive determination, and the inapplicability of the category of substance. The second paralogism posited the independence of this I as presented as object of inner sense, from outer intuition.
