Chapter Summary

R. P. Austin was a man who, achieved a magnum opus for the study of epigraphy that defies the brevity of the life that produced it. One of the most useful features of Austins publication are two compilations of stoikhedon inscriptions that represent a distillation of his research interests and the proper starting place for anyone else investigating the visual phenomenon. The Hekatompedon Inscription figures prominently on both of these lists. Austins other major compilation is a table listing 130 Attic stoikhedon inscriptions spanning the more than two hundred years that the style remained in use. In this table Austin also gives the dimensions of the stoikhos unit for each inscription, which is a critical measurement. To illustrate the Hekatompedon grid, the author presents a facsimile drawing of a section of the restored Metope B, where enough juxtaposing fragments have been assembled to provide an adequate lettering area for analysis.
