Chapter Summary

This supplement is prepared by Julia Zwink. It consists of a general introduction to the Old French terms, written in Hebrew characters, in Berakhyah's lapidary; a linguistic study of the graphical / phonological and lexicological aspects of every single Romance / Latin term; Berakhyah's sources; tables of the sources; glossaries; bibliography; and abbreviations. Berakhyah Ben Natronaiha-Nakdan's lapidary koʾaḥ Ha-avanim contains a certain number of Old French - more precisely Anglo-Norman (Angl. -Nor) - and Latin (Lat.) words, written in Hebrew characters. In contrast to the Hebrew text, these elements are mostly vocalized with a punctuation system that follows by and large the Tiberian tradition. The supplement presents a detailed source analysis for every single stone. The information about the virtue, origin and physical aspect of the stone is traced back to the source texts that Berakhyah has probably used. Anglo-Norman and Latin sources are presented in separate tables.

Keywords: Anglo-Norman (Angl.-Nor); Berakhyah Ben Natronaiha-Nakdan; Hebrew characters; Koʾaḥ Ha-Avanim
