Chapter Summary

This chapter provides a more general and abstracts background to Koryŏ pluralism as well as some possible historical reasons for its development. Koryŏ pluralism can partly be traced back to a universal presence of pluralist elements and partly to the specific and contingent historical circumstances on the Korean peninsula. The prominent presence of a pluralist Weltanschauung in early to middle Koryŏ is both an explanans and an explanandum of this periods history. The author suggests why and when the predominantly pluralist outlook on the world in Koryŏ gradually started to disappear, ultimately to make way for a completely different view on the world that started developing in the early Chosŏn dynasty.

Keywords: Koryŏ; pluralism; Wŏngwang; Weltanschauung
