Chapter Summary

In order to elucidate the Wittelsbachs' claims as defenders of the faith, this chapter focuses first on how Frederick III's confessional diplomacy widened Wittelsbach commitments outside of the Empire. It discusses how confessional marriage diplomacy by both halves led to new dynastic bonds that reinforced their status as defenders of the faith while widening the gulf between the Palatine and Bavarian branches. The chapter then elaborates how these new dynastic alliances contributed to the development of indirect confrontations between both halves during the military conflicts that predated the Thirty Years War and led to the formation of the Protestant Union and Catholic League. Finally, the chapter explores how these cold war conflicts also contributed to the confessional marriage alliance between the Electoral Palatine branch with the House of Stuart, and the Bavarian Wittelsbachs' ability to bring under their influence the Palatine cadet branch of Neuburg through a confessional marriage contract.
