Chapter Summary

This chapter sketches how the traits such as courage, commitment and concern have been embedded throughout Chile's sharply different historical periods into Petras' analysis of the changing interaction among structural transformations, politics and mass mobilizations. The long petal of wine, sea and snow called Chile has been at the centre of Petras formation and maturation as a revolutionary intellectual. He carefully traces how the State and the political system played a double role being the cause and consequence of a fusion of modern and traditional values in Chilean society. The outcome of conflict between corporatist and radical mobilization politics was shaping the Lefts politics of opposition. He remained engaged with examining the policies of the dictatorship and the struggles for democracy, becoming one of the most informed and insightful analysts of the Pinochet regime. James Petras has left a solid legacy contained in the many books and articles on Chile.

Keywords: Chile; corporatist; democracy; dictatorship; James Petras; Pinochet regime; radical
