Chapter Summary

Interpretation, according to the understanding of hermeneutics, involved a truthful, loyal and correct interpretation of a text. In Gadamers hermeneutics, a dialogue between reader and text can result in fusion of horizons. There is an essential difference between philosophical interpretation of musicopera includedand musical interpretation of the musical work that happens during each performance. Not all operas are equally suitable to be transformed into a Gesamtkuntswerk. This chapter concentrates on staging of Don Giovanni and the Ring cycle, especially on the performance of Götterdammerung. It uses two lucky performances: the Chéreau-Boulezb performance of Götterdammerung and Glyndebourne staging of Don Giovanni. It speaks of such performances, which succeeded in mediating the present and the past, concretizing the abstract, and the staging of the works, as Gesamkunswerke. These two performances has been chosen because they brought to light something hidden, namely the similarity, the parallel, the affinity between those two music dramas.

Keywords: Chéreau-Boulezb performance; Don Giovanni; Götterdammerung; Gesamtkuntswerk; Glyndebourne; Hermeneutics; musical interpretation; Opera; philosophical interpretation
