Chapter Summary

This chapter examines the theoretical and empirical basis of the relationship between religious attitudes of church members and their ethnocentric attitudes. It intends to raise a new question in the whole debate regarding the intricate relationship between religion and ethnocentrism by bringing into the discussion the phenomenon of the Dutch civil religion and the various reactions to it by contemporary Christian believers which it categorized into traditional, contextual, and humanistic reactions. The aim of this chapter is to find out what are the effects of the religious attitudes on ethnocentrism, while controlling for some population characteristics. The chapter describes the characteristics of civil religion in the Netherlands. It looks at the diverse reactions of the present day believers on civil religion. The chapter discusses our expectations with regard to the effect of religious attitudes on ethnocentrism. It presents the empirical impact of religious attitudes on ethnocentrism.
