Chapter Summary

This chapter provides an up-to-date account of the situation of Muslims in Croatia. The last national census for the Republic of Croatia, in 2001, provides very reliable data on the number and dispersion of the Muslim population, as well as ethnic groups. The largest Muslim ethnic group in Croatia are Bosniaks. Croatia is a parliamentary democracy. According to the Constitution all religious communities are equal before the law and are separate from the state. The Islamic Community in Croatia is the only officially registered Islamic religious community in the country. The ICC has established cooperation with government, city and municipal authorities and relations with other religious communities. Muslims have the right to be buried according to Islamic rites. The mufti and other leaders of the ICC participate regularly in interreligious conferences with senior representatives of religious communities in Croatia.
