Chapter Summary

This chapter undertakes a critical analysis of the two hallmark concepts of EU bloc imperialism in the context of the EU-ACP economic partnership agreements. Its basic arguments are first that the EU bloc imperialist goal of good governance in the ACP countries is really to institutionalize a political framework that would provide the political protection for the smooth and uninterrupted transfer of wealth from the ACP regions to Europe. US-led globalization as imperialism insisted on democratization in the ACP countries as a political conditionality for IMF and World Bank assistance. The EUs first sustainable development strategy entitled A Sustainable Europe for a Better World: A European Union Strategy for Sustainable Development in 2001 stated, Sustainable development is a global objective.

Keywords: European bloc imperialism; good governance; Neoliberal sustainable development
