Chapter Summary

In 2000 the United States decided to preserve sound recordings and collections of sound recordings that are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant, and for other purposes. In June 1988 Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers returned home from a European summit at which he had discussed the next steps in the political and cultural integration of the Union. An opinion commonly held in respectable circles was that no one any longer knew anything about history in general and Dutch history in particular. The Committee for the Development of a Dutch Canon made official reports in 2006 and 2007. The significance of the canon would be reduced to a silent backgrounda fine example of euphemism. And so neither of the two goals of that canon, enhancing knowledge and presenting a New Tale, was achieved.
