Chapter Summary

This chapter presents the Treaty on Basic Relations signed between Japan and Korea on June 22, 1965. The Treaty was signed taking into consideration the historical background of relationship between their peoples of the two countries and their mutual desire for good neighborliness and normalization of their relations. The Treaty has seven Articles of which the first one says that diplomatic and consular relations shall be established between the High Contracting Parties. Article II confirms that all treaties or agreements concluded between the Empire of Japan and the Empire of Korea on or before August 22, 1910 stand null and void. Article V states that the High Contracting Parties will enter into negotiations at the earliest practicable date for the conclusion of treaties to place their trading, maritime and other commercial relations on a stable and friendly basis.
