Chapter Summary

This chapter presents the Joint Communiqué issued between the governments of Japan and the People's Republic of China on 29 September 1972 on the question of the normalization of relations between Japan and China and other problems between the two countries as well as on other matters of interest to both sides. The Communiqué, among others, says that the abnormal state of affairs that has hitherto existed between Japan and the Peoples Republic of China is terminated on the date the Joint Communiqué is issued, and that the two governments have decided to establish diplomatic relations. Both the governments agree to establish relations of perpetual peace and friendship between the two countries on the basis of the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each others internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit and peaceful co-existence.
