Chapter Summary

This chapter is divided into six sections. In the first section it is explained that though Cao Cao's chief concern lay to the north he had also to deal with troublesome neighbours on the east, south and west who might join Yuan Shao to out-flank him or take him in the rear. The second section describes the conduct of Kong Rong who was charged with treason due to which he arrested and killed with his family. Two other sections of the chapter explain the approaches to Guandu and Yuan Shaos call to arms. The fifth section deals with the year 200 when the armies of Cao Cao and Yuan Shao face each other at Guandu. Cao Cao defeats Chunyu Qiong and destroys Yuan Shaos supply depot; as his army is defeated, Yuan Shao abandons the field. A reappraisal of the Guandu campaign is presented at the end of the chapter.
