Chapter Summary

The return of the Caliphate in Baghdad, following the abandonment of Samarra, marks a period of deep rewriting of history. In this reconstruction effort, the storage process is the historian's concern. Beyond basic elements of social memory, the memorial competition is also the field of politics: "any memory", whether "individual", "collective" or "historic" is a memory for something, and we cannot ignore the political goal (in the broad sense). The storing must indeed be integrated and harmonized to a large extent, with the imperial project. In this context, the mastery of what one had to remember and what to forget should be an indispensable prerequisite for the development of Caliphate historiography. After attaching under these rewrites, it is therefore necessary to study the content and why new interpretations were to emerge. The original text of the chapter is in French.

Keywords: Caliphate historiography; social memory; Syria
