Chapter Summary

This chapter offers a reading of the history of Syrian space in the 2nd/8th century. The approach has the advantage of bringing to light the profound coherence uniting in the story of Šām, the period from the foundation of the Dome of the Rock by ʿAbd al-Malik (72/692) in abandonment of al-Raqqa Caliphate as residence to the death of Hārūn al-Rašīd (193/809). This presents a sense of history on the Syrian space between these two time limits, past the developer of spatial practices of power. The chapter also traces the "Syrian policies" of the last Umayyad and early Abbasid to better illuminate the changing spaces of the Caliphate power. The original text of the chapter is in French.
