Chapter Summary

This chapter provides a list of reference sources relevant to the discussion of Syria under the last Umayyad and the early Abbasids during the period 2nd/8th century. In the perspective of history of the memory and history of the senses, this book offers a new approach to the Syrian area of the 2nd / 8th century, highlighting the historiographical projects and Abbasid Umayyad and practices of power. It demonstrates that a robust culture of historical writing existed in 2nd/8th century Syria, and offers new methodological approaches to access this now lost history, torn between memory and oblivion. Umayyad and Abbasids nourished of ambitious architectural programs in Syrian airspace, the Foundation of the Mosque of Damascus to the 'desert castles', and large-scale projects developed in Raqqa region.
