Chapter Summary

This chapter is dedicated to the time of writing and rewriting of history. The approach is clearly part of a broader history of the senses: the successive rewrites meet so many new meanings given to the past to conform to the needs of constant transformation. The sources now available to apprehend the first centuries of Islam impose an appropriate methodology. It is necessary to disassemble the historiographical mechanisms and mnemonic sedimentation strata that led to the establishment of a vulgate in chronographies resulting from a highly political choice. To capture this widespread phenomenon in all its historical depth, it is essential to uncover the successive phases of rewriting history, starting with some assumptions: the Vulgate finally retained was not the only attempt in the matter, but one that was successful; other possible developments remained at the margin of the Vulgate. The original text of the chapter is in French.

Keywords: first centuries of Islam; historiographical filters; historiographical vulgates
